What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are cosmetic injectables that contain gel-like substances, like hyaluronic acid, to replenish the skin’s volume. Age brings about many physical changes, including volume loss.

When you’re young, collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid keep your skin firm, plump, and youthful. As you age, these substances begin to break down, leading to volume loss, sagging skin, and the formation of wrinkles and fine lines.

Dermal fillers inject volume into the skin to provide a supportive structure for the underlying tissues, effectively smoothing wrinkles and enhancing facial contours.

Are dermal fillers the same as Botox®?

While dermal fillers and Botox both target fine lines and wrinkles, they treat different types. Dermal fillers use gel-like substances to plump up the skin. They fill in static wrinkles, which develop from volume loss and form in the lower half of the face. Fillers can also sharpen the skin’s contours for a more sculpted and chiseled appearance.

Dermal fillers are ideal for:

  • Improving the appearance of nasolabial folds
  • Enhancing the cheekbones and jawline
  • Plumping up thin lips
  • Smoothing wrinkles on the backs of the hands

Meanwhile, Botox and other neuromodulators inhibit muscle movement to minimize the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, which form from muscle movement. They typically appear on the forehead and around the eyes.

How long do dermal fillers last and what happens when they wear off?

Most hyaluronic acid fillers last about 6-12 months, while calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHa) fillers, like Radiesse®, last for at least 12 months. How long fillers take to wear off depends on your metabolism, activity level, genetics, and other important factors.

Your body naturally metabolizes fillers over time, causing your results to gradually fade. Once the fillers absorb, you can return to Blush and Bloom MedSpa for touch-up treatments to maintain your results. Betsy can also combine your treatment with Botox and other neuromodulators for complete rejuvenation.

Who should not get fillers?

Most men and women are candidates for dermal fillers, but Betsy may recommend alternative rejuvenation treatments if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have an active skin infection
  • Take medications that increase bleeding
  • Have an inflammatory skin condition
  • Have a history of keloid scarring

Dermal fillers are safe cosmetic treatments that deliver instant results. Call Blush and Bloom MedSpa today or schedule an appointment online to learn more about the benefits of fillers.
